Unique New Mexico Birds
This page is for you out of towners looking for a target species. Over the years I have consistently found a few bird species in places around Albuquerque that may not be as common in other parts of the country. Good birding!
Roadrunner – the roadrunner can commonly be found at the Rio Grande Nature Center parking lot, or a bit north along the river at the Alameda Bosque Open Space. For those of you traveling through southern New Mexico, Mesilla Valley State Park is also a good place.
Curve-Billed Thrasher – this thrasher can commonly be seen in Albuquerque in the open space at the east end of Copper Avenue in the Sandia foothills
Wood duck – the woodduck can be seen at the same parks, on ponds, as listed for the roadrunner
Black-throated Sparrow – this sparrow is commonly seen near the Embudito trailhead, in Albuquerque. Instead of following the trail up the mountain once you pass the Sandia Wilderness sign, just keep walking up the arroyo.
Cactus Wren – This wren can be consistently found in the Sandia Mountain foothills at the end of Copper, similar to the Curve-Bill Thrasher.
